Data sources and licences
Every national figure on TrackBritain comes from a UK public body and is free to reuse. This page names each publisher, links its licence, and reproduces the attribution wording the licence asks for.
How we use this data
- We are not affiliated with any of these organisations and nothing here is endorsed by them.
- Where we work a figure out ourselves rather than reproducing a published one, we say so and show how.
- Every page that shows a figure names its publisher and its licence, not just this page.

What we do not use
Some obvious datasets are missing on purpose. These were checked and ruled out, and the reasons are here so the question stays settled.
- Bank of England exchange rates (XUDL series)
- The Bank's legal page excludes selected FX series from the OGL because they are reproduced under licence from a third party (LSEG). Revisit with ECB reference rates, which are free with acknowledgement, if FX is ever wanted.
- A single 'UK average BMI' figure
- It does not exist. Each nation runs its own health survey with different methods, and Wales is self-reported. We ship the England figure from the Health Survey for England and badge it England. Scotland could be a separate tracker later.
- Sport England Active Lives, taken directly
- Good data, but under Sport England's own licence. Taking the same figures via Fingertips puts them under the OGL and removes the question.
- Rightmove, Zoopla, Halifax and Nationwide house price indices
- Proprietary. The UK House Price Index is the official open one.
- Gallup, YouGov and Ipsos wellbeing or approval polling
- Proprietary; polling houses licence for a fee. ONS personal wellbeing is the open equivalent and is already here.
- Google Trends
- The terms prohibit redistribution of the raw series.
- Trading Economics, Statista and similar aggregators
- Paid, and they are repackaging the primary sources we already use.
- Crime 'near me' by latitude and longitude
- It depends on each visitor's own location, so it cannot be a committed snapshot, and this site does not fetch at runtime. Force-level monthly counts ship instead.
- Weekly COVID metrics
- The UKHSA dashboards are OGL, but the series are discontinued or downgraded. Not a sound basis for a long-term tracker.
- Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish crime data
- Different recording systems. police.uk covers England, Wales and NI; Police Scotland publishes separately. Could be added later as separate, correctly-badged cards.
